Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Virginia Lee Burton (illustrator). A very early issue of this Virgina Lee Burton classic, even uncommon as such. Probably the 3rd issue of the 1939 1st edition, with its salmon-colored boards (instead of gray), its lack of the 1939 date on the title page and a $3.00 price (rather than $1.50) on the dustjacket flap. Still though, with no further printings mentioned on the copyright page and the reference on the rear inner-flap (as the 1st issue of the 1st edition also has) to Virginia Lee Burton's "Choo Choo", this is undoutedly a very early printing. And an impressive, well-preserved copy to boot. Tight and VG+ (with very light creasing along a number of the pages) in a crisp, price-intact, VG+ dustjacket, with light creasing --and several small closed tears-- to the panel edges. Still though, bright and very presentable. Oblong octavo, wonderfully illustrated thruout in ruch color by the redoubtable Virginia Lee Burton.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st. First printing with oatmeal-colored cloth with black and rust front cover illustration of steam shovel. Matching date of 1939 on title page and copyright page. Original bookseller sticker on rear endpaper: "Hudson's Book Shop Detroit". Cloth covers show light wear and some darkening from handling, some small soil spots to front board, more soiling to rear. Contents quite clean with one or two neatly repaired closed tears (glued not taped). Rear endpapers partly split, front endpapers fully separated. Contents are almost completely loose, just holding on with one thread. An excellent candidate for repair. Very rare first state.

First edition of this children's classic with the date of 1939 on the title page. Oblong quarto, original tan cloth. A very good copy in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some light expert restoration to the spine extremities. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Published in the midst of the Great Depression, Virginia Lee Burton's classic favorite Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel ranks among the National Education Association's "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." "Taking her cue from her small sons, Aristides and Michael, Burton chose subjects that would intrigue children. Mary Ann, the steam shovel (Burton's books) have heroes and heroines children can understand and enjoy, ingenious and satisfactory endings and lively illustrations. The books survive because they exhibit so effectively the elements most basic to children's literature" (Silvey, 109-10). The beloved story was adapted into a short animated film directed by Michael Sporn and aired for the first time on HBO in 1990.

Though price-clipped, the dust jacket is identifiable as a first issue jacket, bearing an ad for Choo-Choo on the rear flap, and a yellow spine that just has the book title followed by an abbreviation for the publisher, "H.M. CO", with no mention of the author's name. In Very Good condition. Clean text. Pages show light signs of handle, and are lightly age toned, with light rubbing to a few. Front paste down has a small blue smudge. The binding is holding but lightly pulled with light splitting starting at the front. The boards show light wear, with light rubbing to the stamping. The dust jacket shows edge wear, with rubbing and short tears starting at the folds. The spine of the dust jacket has been reinforced from the verso. First edition. First printing of the classic picture book, a carefully designed balance of text and image by the author, in the scarce original dust jacket. Along with Sendak and McCloskey, Burton is among the handful of picture book creators whose talents were equally accomplished in both roles, as author and artist. Burton was a perfectionist obsessed with design theory, which she explored in the deceptively simple format. MIKE MULLIGAN is acclaimed for its attention to the small details, while maintaining a clear and spirited through-line: "The wonder is that she achieved what she wanted without losing the spontaneity," noted Barbara Bader. As a result, her books are often read to tatters and not many collectible first editions of this title exist. An exceptionally nice copy. 8.5'' x 9.5''. Original tan pictorial cloth. In original price-clipped red pictorial dust jacket. Color pictorial endpapers. [44] pages. A few tiny margin mends and hinge wear in an amazingly bright jacket with only a few tiny closed edge tears and 1/4'' chip off top of spine. Near fine in very good plus jacket.
